CLARK ART INSTITUTE PRESENTS SERIES OF IN FOCUS GALLERY TALKS

Williamstown, Massachusetts—This winter, the Clark Art Institute presents “In Focus,” a series of free thematic tours of its permanent collection with a Clark educator on select Sundays at 2 pm.

December 28: The Color White
White is an intriguing color to work with. It is brilliant, and its variations endless, providing artists with both opportunities and challenges. The emotional overtones of white can range from light and hope to death and fear, to sweetness and warmth and to coldness and isolation. Explore the permanent collection and share in the discovery of the power of white in art.

January 25: Mythology and Nudity in European Art
The vibrant stories of ancient Greek and Roman mythology have inspired artists for centuries. In this session, examine mythological scenes in painting and sculptures from the sixteenth to the twentieth century in the Clark’s collection. Learn how mythology became one of the four approved subjects for artists studying at the French Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, and how mythological scenes provided artists with an opportunity to show off their skills at portraying human bodies in the nude.

February 22: Stormy Weather
The weather affects us every day, both physically and emotionally, influencing our moods and imagination. Artists have long been captivated by the power and beauty of the elements, using the natural world as a source of inspiration for works of art. Explore mid- to late-nineteenth century paintings of the natural world in the Clark’s collection. Examine and reflect upon the way artists use elements of weather to create a sense of drama, isolation, tranquility, and even human fragility.

Free with gallery admission. Capacity is limited. Pick up a ticket at the Clark Center admissions desk, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Meet in the Museum Pavilion. For more information, visit clarkart.edu/events. Admission to the Clark is free from January through March 2026.
