CLARK ART INSTITUTE HOSTS LECTURE ON GROWING AN ART MUSEUM BY NORMAN ROCKWELL MUSEUM DIRECTOR LAURIE NORTON MOFFATT

Williamstown, Massachusetts—On Saturday, April 11 at 2 pm, the Clark Art Institute presents a lecture by Laurie Norton Moffatt in celebration of her forty-year tenure as Director and CEO of the Norman Rockwell Museum (Stockbridge, Massachusetts). The talk explores Moffatt’s illustrious career and takes place in the Manton Research Center auditorium.

As a nineteen-year-old college student, Norton Moffatt began her career at the Rockwell as a part-time docent. She became curator of the museum in 1981 and took on the director role in 1986, at age twenty-nine. Once a lesser-known illustrator, Norman Rockwell has become a deeply respected artist and visual storyteller, thanks in no small part to Norton Moffatt’s visionary leadership and early appreciation for Rockwell’s talent. Norton Moffatt's leadership guided the Norman Rockwell Museum’s growth from a small local institution into an internationally renowned center for American illustration art and expanded the museum collection to include nearly 1,000 Rockwell originals and 25,000 works by other notable illustrators. As Berkshire Magazine has argued, Norton Moffatt has had a hand in shifting the museum world’s perception of illustration art.
