CLARK ART INSTITUTE CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH
Williamstown, Massachusetts—On Thursday, June 19, the Clark Art Institute celebrates Juneteenth with special tours, a pop-up exhibition, and art-making.
Educator-led tours are offer at 10:15 am and 1 pm in the Clark’s permanent collection galleries. These tours showcase how museums change the stories they tell, and how works of art can inspire a more dynamic and inclusive understanding of the past. The morning tour is designed for adults; the afternoon tour is open to visitors of all ages.
From 11 am to 1 pm, a specially curated pop-up exhibition at the Manton Study Center for Works on Paper displays a remarkable collection of early photography by and of African Americans, ranging from extravagant Harlem wedding photographs to stoic portraits of Civil War veterans in uniform. This pop-up includes photographs by James Van Der Zee, Prentice Herman Polk, Doris Ulmann, and others.
Stop by the Museum Pavilion between 1 and 3 pm to create a self-portrait and experiment with all the different ways you would like to be portrayed.
The Clark’s 140-acre campus is a perfect space for community gathering and self-reflection.
Educator-led tours are free with gallery admission and meet in the Museum Pavilion; capacity is limited. Art activity is free. For more information, visit clarkart.edu/events.
Family programs are generously supported by Allen & Company.
