CLARK ART INSTITUTE PRESENTS Summer Book Club Discussion of Sigrid Undset’s The Wreath
Williamstown, Massachusetts—On Wednesday, July 28, the Clark Art Institute presents a discussion of Norwegian author Sigrid Undset’s book The Wreath from 7 pm to 9 pm over Zoom.
The discussion, led by a member of Clark staff, considers how Undset’s treatment of identity and sense of place resonate with the life and work of Nikolai Astrup, whose paintings and prints are presented in Nikolai Astrup: Visions of Norway. The novel is available in English, and copies are available for purchase in the Clark gift shop.
The Wreath is the first novel from Undset’s trilogy, Kristin Lavransdatter, about a strong fourteenth-century woman. In this trilogy, Undset carefully reconstructs medieval Norway, enriching her text with descriptions of cultural traditions and folklore, setting Kristin’s adventures against Norway’s dramatic mountains and stunning fjords. Undset won the Nobel Prize for Literature for these volumes in 1928.

Galleries are open 10 am to 5 pm daily in July and August, and open Tuesday through Sunday from September through June. Advance timed tickets are required. Admission is $20; free year-round for Clark members, children 18 and younger, and students with valid ID.
