CLARK ART INSTITUTE AIRS THE MET: LIVE IN HD PRODUCTION OF “MADAMA BUTTERFLY”

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Anthony Minghella’s vividly cinematic staging of Puccini’s tragic opera Madama Butterfly airs at the Clark Art Institute on Saturday, November 9, at 12:55 pm. Now in its fourteenth season, The Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live high-definition cinema simulcasts. Broadcasts feature the full performance along with backstage interviews and commentary.

Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, Madama Butterfly follows the story of a young Japanese geisha who marries an American naval officer. This Metropolitan Opera production features soprano Hui He in the devastating title role, with a cast that also includes tenor Piero Pretti as Pinkerton, baritone Paulo Szot as Sharpless, and mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong as Suzuki. Pier Giorgio Morandi conducts one of opera’s most beautiful and heartbreaking scores. Run time is 3 hours, 12 minutes.

The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts.
