THE MET: LIVE IN HD PRODUCTION OF ‘COSÌ FAN TUTTE’ TO AIR AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE

Williamstown, Massachusetts—The Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD series continues at the Clark Art Institute with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte on Saturday, March 31 at 12:55 pm in the auditorium. Set in the 1950s on Coney Island, Phelim McDermott’s new production of Mozart’s comedy features Amanda Majeski as the conflicted Fiordiligi; Serena Malfi as her sister, Dorabella; Tony Award-winner Kelli O’Hara as their feisty maid, Despina; Ben Bliss and Adam Plachetka as the sisters’ fiancés, Ferrando and Guglielmo; and Christopher Maltman as the cynical Don Alfonso. David Robertson conducts.

The first performance of Mozart's opera, loosely translated as “Women are like that,” took place at the Burgtheater in Vienna in January 1790. It was performed only five times before the run was stopped by the death of the Emperor Joseph II and the ensuing period of court mourning. After another five runs later in 1790, the opera was not again played in Vienna during Mozart's lifetime. The first British performance was in 1811 at the King's Theatre, London, but Così fan tutte was not performed in the United States until 1922, when it was given at the Metropolitan Opera.

Now in its twelfth season, The Met: Live in HD is the Metropolitan Opera’s Peabody and Emmy Award-winning series of live performances transmitted to theaters in seventy countries around the world. Live telecasts feature the full performance along with backstage interviews and commentary.

ABOUT THE CLARK

The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts.
