FAMILY DAY AT CLARK ART INSTITUTE CELEBRATES ‘CREATIVE ENCOUNTERS’

Williamstown, Massachusetts—Creative Encounters Family Day will be held at the Clark Art Institute on Sunday, June 18 from 11 am–4 pm. All activities are free, and admission to the galleries is free all day (10 am–5 pm).
A wide variety of activities, based on the current exhibitions Orchestrating Elegance: Alma-Tadema and Design and Picasso: Encounters, as well as two upcoming exhibitions featuring the works of contemporary artist Helen Frankenthaler (opening July 1), is available for all ages. The schedule of events includes:
- “Grumbling Gryphons:” Watch a spellbinding dramatization of the ancient Greek tale, “The Myth of Persephone” (performances at 11:30 am & 1:30 pm)
- Mister G: Move to the rhythm with the Latin Grammy Award-winning musician as he performs original, multicultural music for children and families (performances at 12:30 pm & 2:30 pm)
- Cubist Caricatures: Get your abstract portrait drawn ($5)
- The Art of Instruments: Watch an artist demo and learn what it takes to make a custom guitar or mandolin with craftsmen from the Berkshire Stringed Instruments School of Lutherie
- Face Painting: Get a new look with designs inspired by the Clark's summer exhibitions
- Toga Station: Create a special costume inspired by Greek antiquity
- Alma-Tadema’s Beer Garden and Ping-Pong Hall: Taste a selection of local brews (ages 21 and over) or challenge a friend to a game of table tennis
- Picasso’s Cubist Sculpture garden: Rearrange colorful blocks to create an original 3-D masterpiece
- Frankenthaler’s Pour: Play on a giant slide inspired by Helen Frankenthaler's color field paintings
- Giant Chess: Play the classic board game on a grand scale
- Paint on a Piano: Help us transform an old piano into a piece of community art!
- Musical “Petting Zoo:” Get hands-on experience with instruments, with the help of musicians from the Springfield Symphony Orchestra
- DIY Instruments: Create your own maraca, mandolin, drum, or rhythm board
ABOUT THE CLARK
The Clark Art Institute, located in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, is one of a small number of institutions globally that is both an art museum and a center for research, critical discussion, and higher education in the visual arts. Opened in 1955, the Clark houses exceptional European and American paintings and sculpture, extensive collections of master prints and drawings, English silver, and early photography. The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm; open daily in July and August.
