CLARK ART INSTITUTE CONCLUDES PICASSO FILM SERIES WITH 'NERUDA'

For Immediate Release
August 9, 2017

Williamstown, Massachusetts—In the final installment of the free film series “Picasso in Film,” the Clark Art Institute airs Neruda (2016, unrated) on Monday, August 21 at 7 pm. The film will be shown in the auditorium, located in the Clark’s Manton Research Center. Run time is 1 hour, 47 minutes.

Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film tells the story of Nobel-Prize winning Chilean poet and politician Pablo Neruda, the most notorious communist in post-World War II Chile. Faced with shifting political ideologies, Neruda retreats to an underground existence, hunted by the police and secret detectives. Ever the poet, Neruda leaves sly clues for his pursuers in an effort to refuse living the life of the fugitive—while artists back in Europe, led by Pablo Picasso, fight for his freedom. Eventually, Neruda escapes to Argentina by passing through the Andes mountains to freedom. Picasso appears in the film when he reads a poem at a conference that Neruda has secretly mailed to him.
