CLARK ART INSTITUTE TO AIR JAPANESE FILM SERIES IN CONJUNCTION WITH JAPANESE IMPRESSIONS EXHIBITION

Williamstown, Massachusetts—“Colors of Japan: Cinematic Impressions,” a free Sunday afternoon film series at the Clark Art Institute, begins Sunday, January 22 at 1:30 pm with The Makioka Sisters. Celebrating the colorful beauty of Japan and presented in conjunction with the Clark’s Japanese Impressions exhibition, the films will be shown in the auditorium, located in the Manton Research Center. All films are in Japanese with English subtitles.
The Makioka Sisters (unrated, 1983; 2 hrs 20 mins) is Kon Ichikawa’s lyrical adaptation of Junichiro Tanizaki’s novel, which follows four sisters through the cycle of seasons in the late 1930s. The graceful study of changing times and fading customs is rendered in vivid and evocative color.
The series continues with Gate of Hell on January 29, Kwaidan on February 5, and Equinox Flower on February 26. For more information, visit clarkart.edu.
Japanese Impressions is on view through April 2, 2017. Films are free, but those wishing to visit the galleries will be charged admission. The Clark is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. Adult admission is $20; members and children under 18 are always free.
