CLARK FELLOW PRESENTS LECTURE ON MIDDLE-PERIOD CHINA

February 24, 2017

Williamstown, Massachusetts—In an ongoing series of lectures presented by fellows at the Clark Art Institute, Kress Fellow in the Literature of Art Jeehee Hong presents “Framing Affect and Vision in Middle-Period China” on Tuesday, march 7 at 5:30 pm. The free lecture will be held in the Michael Conforti Pavilion.

The lecture addresses how emotional expressions were shaped in material form through various modes of visual and spatial experiences in middle-period China (ninth–fourteenth centuries). Primary examples include images of grieving figures in funerary contexts.

Jeehee Hong is the Gretta Chambers Chair in East Asian Art History at McGill University. A specialist in the ritual art and visual cultures of middle-period China, she is the author of Theater of the Dead: A Social Turn in Chinese Funerary Art, 1000–1400 (University of Hawai'i Press, 2016). At the Clark, she is tracing the formations of boundaries, including religious and social boundary-making, as communicated through treatises on artistic practices and theories of reception from the middle period.
