April 13, 2015

Williamstown, Massachusetts—The Clark Art Institute hosts a special tea event on Sunday, April 19 at 1:30 pm celebrating the publication of a new book on the Institute’s teacup collection by noted artist Molly Hatch. Alex Harney of Harney & Sons Fine Teas of Millerton, New York will join Hatch for a special presentation and tea tasting. In addition to the tea event, the Clark’s daylong celebration of tea and teacups includes an author’s book talk between Hatch and Kathleen Morris, the Sylvia and Leonard Marx Curator of Decorative Arts, at 3 pm and a book signing at 4 pm.

The tea event will include both savory and sweets courses, with an accompanying selection of Harney & Sons teas. The menu includes: smoked gouda and rosemary scones; pear and blue cheese sandwich; poached curried chicken sandwich; radish and cress with cream cheese sandwich; cucumber, radish, and herb cream cheese sandwich; mini lemon curd tartlets; choux swans with almond cream and caramel; raspberry white chocolate scones; and ginger molasses cookies. Alex Harney will provide tea tastings from the Kundala region of India and discuss the firm’s process for sourcing, selecting, and blending teas.

Tickets to the tea are $25 ($23 Clark members) and can be reserved at clarkart.edu or by calling 413 458 0524. The lecture and book signing events are free of charge.

Hatch recently published A Teacup Collection: Paintings of Porcelain Treasures, a book based on holdings in the Clark Art Institute’s ceramic decorative arts collection. She was given exclusive access to the largely unviewed 300-piece Clark collection, studying the details of each cup and the related curatorial records to create original watercolors of more than 100 teacups.

In addition to the book signing event in the Museum Store, the Clark will offer a curated selection of her ceramic wares, including mugs and vases created exclusively for the Clark, as well as a selection of many of Hatch’s original watercolors of the teacups pictured in the book.

Harney & Sons Fine Teas, a family owned and managed company, sources, blends, and packages its own product from start to finish. The company has grown from six original teas to more than three hundred.
