'ART HISTORY AND MATERIALITY' TOPIC OF PUBLIC CONVERSATION AT THE CLARK

For Immediate Release

March 05, 2013

Williamstown, MA—On Saturday, March 16 at 5:30 pm, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute will host a free public conversation entitled “Art History and Materiality.” Participants will share their perspectives, engage in dialogue, and answer questions.

The conversation is the culminating event of a colloquium by the same name, which seeks to reveal the material underpinnings of art historical thought—both in its past traditions and its current practices.

The Clark sponsors invitational colloquia—small, semi-private gatherings of researchers who wish to discuss topics of mutual interest, perhaps in preparation for a book. Colloquia focus on an array of themes spanning the history and historiography of art.

The “Art History and Materiality” colloquium is convened by Jennifer Jane Marshall, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and Kate Mondloch, University of Oregon. Participants include Bill Brown, University of Chicago; Carolyn Dean, University of California, Santa Cruz; Susan Dackerman, Harvard Art Museums; Christina Kiaer, Northwestern University; Michelle Kuo, Artforum; Gregory Levine, University of California, Berkeley; Fred R. Myers, New York University; Bissera Pentcheva, Stanford University; Christopher B. Steiner, Connecticut College.
