FREE FAMILY DAY AT THE CLARK

Williamstown, MA—Popular folk singers Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion headline the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute’s free Americana Family Day on Sunday, June 30 from 11 am to 4 pm.
The event is held in conjunction with the Clark’s summer exhibitions of works by iconic American artists Winslow Homer and George Inness. Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History andGeorge Inness: Gifts from Frank and Katherine Martucci are on view through September 8, 2013. Admission to the galleries is free all day.
Husband and wife team Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, known as Sarah Lee and Johnny, have toured extensively both as a duo and as part of the “Guthrie Family Rides Again” tour with Sarah Lee’s legendary father Arlo Guthrie. The duo also recently released the children’s album Go Waggaloo. They will perform at 12:05 pm and 2:50 pm.
Family Day is one of the Clark’s most popular events of the season, and this summer’s event is packed with fun activities for the whole family—from art and music to fly fishing and horseshoes. Scheduled events include:
- Hay rides, sack races, and an egg toss contest
- Sing-along with Forebitter, one of America’s premier sea music groups
- Horseshoes, shuttlecock, and other period lawn games
- Pickle-eating and pie-eating contests
- Nineteenth-century folktales with storyteller Tim Van Egmond
- Appearance by Howard Wright as President Abraham Lincoln
- Art-making projects including creating the sea in a jar, nautical tote bags, Victorian-era optical illusions, and sailors’ valentines
- Fly fishing lessons provided by Orvis
- Print-making workshop led by local artist Jay Foxe
- Performances by the barbershop quartet Shave and a Haircut
- “Your Day in Court,” a chance to participate in a court case and learn about the history of American justice
- “The District School,” a step back in time to a typical 1800s school
- Lincoln log house building
- Photo opportunities in a nineteenth-century photo booth
- Appearances by street performers The Silver Swimmers
Visitors are encouraged to stop by the information desk to pick up a family guide, which accompanies Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History and is an excellent way to engage children with the exhibition.
About the Clark
Set amidst 140 acres in the Berkshires, the Clark is one of the few major art museums that also serves as a leading international center for research and scholarship. The Clark presents public and education programs and organizes groundbreaking exhibitions that advance new scholarship. The Clark’s research and academic programs include an international fellowship program and conferences.
