PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND TO PERFORM AT THE CLARK JUNE 28

Williamstown, MA—The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute welcomes the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on Friday, June 28 at 8 pm. Fresh off a rollicking Grammy Awards performance backing the Black Keys and Dr. John, the band continues to reaffirm its status as the greatest ambassadors of New Orleans jazz – even as they celebrate fifty years of concert tour performances in 2013.

The intimate scale and exceptional acoustics of the Clark’s auditorium make this a unique venue in which to enjoy the Preservation Jazz Hall Band’s exceptional musicianship. Rolling Stone magazine recently noted that Preservation Hall Jazz Band “shines like a beacon of New Orleans jazz, celebrating the unique artistic culture and music form of the Crescent City.” The band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’s French Quarter which is its home base. The band has traveled worldwide, spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans jazz—a mission strengthened by the devastation brought about by Hurricane Katrina in 2007. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British royalty or the king of Thailand, the band plays music that embodies a joyful, timeless spirit.

The band’s long history includes members who performed with early pioneers of the jazz form, including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. The equally illustrious roster of band leaders includes Willie and Percy Humphrey, De De and Billie Pierce, Sweet Emma Barrett, and Wendall and John Brunious. These founding artists and dozens of others passed on the culture of their music to a younger generation, who now follows in their footsteps.

The Clark concert was originally scheduled for February 8, but was postponed due to weather.
