Joaneath Spicer

Walters Art Museum, Baltimore

July–August 2002

Joaneath Spicer, curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art at the Walters Art Musuem, Baltimore, will pursue a project on verisimilitude in portraiture of the 15th and 16th centuries, and on the connection or disconnection between images being praised as "like life itself" and as having been studied "from life." Her previous publications in northern European art include Masters of Light, Dutch Painters in Utrecht in the Golden Age (San Francisco/Baltimore/London 1997-98). Other current projects range from the contextual reinstallation of the Old Master collections at the Walters to an essay on Michelangelo's assessment of his contemporaries as a reflection of his own self image.
