Janet Catherine Berlo is professor of art history at the University of Rochester, where she co-directs the graduate program in visual and cultural studies. Specializing in indigenous art and culture of the Americas, her more recent work concerns nineteenth-century women and the place of quilts in American visual culture. Her books include Wild by Design: Two Hundred Years of Innovation and Artistry in American Quilts (Seattle, 2003), Spirit Beings and Sun Dancers: Black Hawk's Vision of The Lakota World (New York, 2001), Quilting Lessons (Lincoln, 2000), and Native North American Art (Oxford, 1998). While at the Clark she will further her current project on American women, quilts, and urban visual culture in the early nineteenth century.
