David Carrier is Champney Family Professor at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Art. Professor Carrier is a philosopher who writes art criticism and teaches art history. He has published books on topics as diverse as Baudelaire's art criticism - High Art: Charles Baudelaire and the Origins of Modernist Painting (University Park, Pennsylvania, and London, 1996); Poussin's paintings - Poussin's Paintings: A Study in Art-Historical Methodology (University Park, Pennsylvania, and London, 1993); and comic strips - The Aesthetics of Comics (University Park, Pennsylvania and London, 2000). At the Clark he will be writing an intellectual biorgraphy of Adrian Stokes and a study of Islamic aesthetics.
