Colin Bailey

Former deputy director and chief curator of the National Gallery of Canada, Colin Bailey was appointed chief curator of the Frick Collection in New York in July 2000. While in residence at the Clark, he completed a manuscript on eighteenth-century French connoisseurship and collecting. Bailey has written widely on French painting of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, most notably on artistic developments in paint and pencil under the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. He has organized such exhibitions as Renoir Portraits: Impressions of an Age and Impressionist Masterpieces from the Barnes Collection: Cézanne to Matisse. His many publications include The Loves of the Gods: Mythological Painting from Watteau to David, Masterpieces of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism: The Annenberg Collection, and numerous articles and essays.
