Albrecht Dürer
The Life of the Virgin: The Flight into Egypt
1504 (Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute)
The German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was one of the great masters of the Northern Renaissance. In 1511 Dürer published his Life of the Virgin series, which consists of twenty woodcuts that depict various episodes throughout the Virgin Mary's life. Drawing from the Clark's exceptional collection that includes a virtually complete representation of Dürer's vast corpus of engravings, woodcuts, and etchings, the exhibition also included other images of the Virgin and Child by Marcantonio Raimondi, an important printmaker of the Italian Renaissance. This show was mounted in conjunction with the Medieval Mystery exhibition.
