Woman with Furs

c. 1880–85

The young woman in this painting is fashionably dressed in warm furs and a large hat, silhouetted against a snowy landscape. Sargent’s vigorous handling of the paint and the woman’s slightly forward-leaning posture enhance the suggestion of movement. The inscription tells us that the artist gave this lively picture to Hippolyte de Vergèses, his fellow student in the studio of the French painter Carolus-Duran.
