The Gamekeeper

1850s

Troyon was widely admired as an animal painter and his images of dogs were especially popular. The artist had many opportunities to study scenes like this on summer visits to a friend’s country home. Though huntsmen trained their dogs to be vicious in the hunt, Troyon has shown them in a moment of playful repose.
