Port of Rouen, Unloading Wood

1898

Toward the end of his career, Pissarro shifted his attention from rural scenes to cityscapes. Here he captures the activity of a busy riverside dock in Rouen, with industrial buildings in the background and freighters lining the waterway. Clear light illuminates the scene and each element is described with a rich variety of brushstrokes, revealing the visual beauty of an ordinary, functioning work site.
