Two-Handled Cup and Cover

1797/98

This cup was probably made as a racing trophy—the medallion on the front shows a racetrack with two jockeys on galloping horses, their hooves hovering off the ground. Since the medallion on the opposite side is not engraved, the cup may have remained in the silversmith’s stock. Of the five racing trophies in the Clark’s collection, this is the only one that was not presented to Sterling Clark to mark a victory by one of his horses.
