Salvator Mundi

c. 1470–72

Jesus is shown here as the salvator mundi (savior of the world)—his right hand raised in a blessing, his left holding a globe. Such images followed a traditional format and were intended as aids to prayer. This panel was once at the center of a predella, a row of images situated below the main sections of an altarpiece. Crivelli painted the altarpiece for a Franciscan monastery in central Italy, where he lived and worked.
