In 1998 the Clark began a major initiative to establish a core collection of European and American photographs from the 1840s through the 1910s. The collection now numbers more than 100 works, including important photographs by Gustave Le Gray, Édouard Baldus, Linneus Tripe, Edgar Degas, Eugène Atget, William Henry Fox Talbot, Heinrich Kühn, Julia Margaret Cameron, Frances Frith, Carleton Watkins, and Alfred Stieglitz.
