Dore Bowen (Clark/Centre Allemand Fellow) is Associate Professor of Contemporary Art History at San José State University. Her research concerns the phenomenology and cultural history of the photographic image. In 2003 she co-curated Agitate: Negotiating the Photographic Process and in 2006–07, in cooperation with the Arab Image Foundation,Soit dit en passant and Not Given: Talking of and Around Photographs of Arab Women. In 2009 she co-mounted Early Man on a Modern Road at the Musée de Préhistoire in France. Recent publications include “Imagine There's No Image (It's Easy If You Try)” in The Companion to Art History Since 1945 and an essay forthcoming in Adaptation Theories. Fellowships include the Camargo Foundation, the Getty Research Library, and the School of Criticism and Theory. Bowen’s Clark project traces the diorama from its emergence in Paris to its mid-life in the natural history museum and rebirth in contemporary art.
