Piero della Francesca

Virgin and Child Enthroned with Four Angels

c. 1460-70

The Frick Collection is currently presenting Piero della Francesca in America, an exhibition of seven works by the Renaissance master, including Virgin and Child Enthroned with Four Angels, on loan from the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. This presentation is the first monographic exhibition in the United States of the artist’s work, bringing together six panels from the Sant’Agostino altarpiece—the largest number from this masterwork ever reassembled for display.

Virgin and Child Enthroned with Four Angels is Piero's only intact altarpiece in this country. A beloved work in the Clark’s collection, the painting has rarely been presented outside of the Institute’s galleries and has only been previously shown in New York once since 1955.
