Guillaume Lethière
French, 1760 - 1832
Brutus Condemning His Sons to Death
c. 1788
Lethière’s preliminary study features many compositional details that were ultimately not included, such as the impassioned figures at left who dramatically gesture toward the severed head. Lethière rendered the garments of these bystanders in detail, alternating between delicate and heavy lines to emphasize the movement of the fabric as they react to the violence.
