Ridolfo Ghirlandaio

Portrait of a Man
c. 1500–20
Ridolfo Ghirlandaio painted this man’s features with great precision, carefully recording his wrinkled skin, stubble, and thin gray hair. The sitter’s identity, however, remains unknown, with no further clues provided by his rings and dark clothing. Son of the famous Florentine artist Domenico Ghirlandaio, Ridolfo was trained in a naturalistic approach to portraiture popular in late fifteenth and early sixteenth-century Florence.
