Raffaella della Olga, whose exhibition appears in the Eugene V. Thaw Gallery for Works on Paper, will be in conversation with curator Robert Wiesenberger about her singular process of making artist’s books and paintings using modified typewriters and multicolor inks on a range of materials. Della Olga (b. 1967, Bergamo; lives and works in Paris) thinks of herself as a sculptor, typing on surfaces ranging from silk to sandpaper and embossing them with forceful keystrokes before binding them into three-dimensional form. She is also a printmaker, who inserts textiles and carbon paper into the typewriter carriage to capture their impressions on the page. And, with her manual interventions, she draws, smearing her sheets by pressing the ink ribbons with one hand while dragging the paper with the other. The outcome is a unique object that transforms the book as we know it. Raffaella della Olga: Typescripts is the artist’s first museum solo exhibition.
