“It Looks like How Jazz Sounds”: Jordan Horton on Romare Bearden’s The Dove

Romare Bearden’s collage The Dove (1964) plays with fragmented forms to visually evoke the “broken time” of jazz while also embodying how Black people living in Harlem in the 1960s might have experienced the urban spaces they knew as home.

Recorded on March 2, 2021.

Jordan Horton is a graduate student in the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art and a Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, Massachusetts. A native of Newark, NJ, Jordan studied at DePauw University as an undergraduate and majored in art history with minors in studio art and museum studies. Jordan’s current academic interests are archival studies, institutional critique, and Black contemporary art.
