1988 NPR Interview with Susan Stamberg

In this 1988 interview, National Public Radio journalist Susan Stamberg profiles Helen Frankenthaler at a watershed moment in her career. Stamberg visits the artist in her Manhattan studio, where they discuss Frankenthaler’s background, technique, and influences. The story previewed the artist’s 1989–90 retrospective—which was organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and traveled to The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Detroit Institute of Arts—and her monograph Frankenthaler by John Elderfield, published by Harry N. Abrams in 1989.
