Saturday, August 10, 2013
James Nicholson, author of the 2013 book Never Say Die, presents a free lecture and book signing.
In 1954, a quarter of a million people—including Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill—braved cold and damp conditions at Epsom Downs in Surrey, England to witness a Kentucky-born chestnut colt named Never Say Die gallop to a two-length triumph at 33-1 odds, beginning an important shift in the world of thoroughbred racing. Author James C. Nicholson's Never Say Die relates the tale of this thrilling victory as well as its surprising and far-reaching consequences. The book traces the champion's bloodlines and history, including the thirty-five years of investment by Robert Sterling Clark in the bloodstock of the Bluegrass state.
