Join us for a lecture by Ginia Sweeney, this year's Judith M. Lenett Fellow and a second-year graduate student in the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art. For her year-long Lenett project, Ginia has conserved a Civil War-era portrait of former New York State Governor Edwin D. Morgan, attributed to Asa W. Twitchell (1820-1904). Ginia will share the results of her conservation and art historical research. Is stripping grime off a painted surface the equivalent of erasing years of history? What does it mean that so many paintings like this one are languishing in storage, unseen? And what, if anything, do we owe to such objects?
