Entrancing or Endangered? Nineteenth-Century Views of Italy - SOLD OUT
November 19, 2009
6:00 pm
Get a taste of Rome and an opportunity to learn more about the Clark’s collection of nineteenth-century views of Italy. Jay A. Clarke, Manton Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, will discuss the complex period between 1850 and 1900 when Italy’s social and political realities changed drastically. She will consider how both Italian and non-Italian artists captured these architectural and societal shifts. While figures like Jean Baptiste Camille Corot strove to evoke an Arcadian past with his views of the Roman countryside, others, like the Scottish photographer Robert MacPherson documented the precarious state of its decaying ruins. These works will be discussed in conjunction with the fall exhibition, Steps off the Beaten Path. The evening will conclude with a fabulous meal prepared by chef Steve Wilkinson featuring food and wines of Rome and the surrounding regions.
$45 ($55 guests of members). RSVP to 413 458 0585 by November 12.
