Werner L. Gundersheimer is director emeritus of the Folger Library in Washington, D.C. His extensive publications on Italian Renaissance art and culture include Ferrara: The Style of a Renaissance Despotism (Princeton University Press, 1973). His current project, After the Grand Tour: Italy as Cultural Capital, 1814-1914, will consolidate much of his wide-ranging scholarship while taking up one of his earliest interests: the public’s passionate attraction to Italian art and culture.
