Master Drawings: Sterling and Francine Clark as Collectors

By David S. Brooke

$5.00 Softcover

One of the finest collections at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is a group of Old Master and nineteenth-century drawings. In celebration of the Institute’s fortieth anniversary, a selection of forty drawings from the nearly four hundred acquired by the founders was chosen for this exhibition and publication, which includes drawings by Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Watteau, Daumier, Degas, Turner, Manet, Morisot, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cassatt, and Homer, among others. An essay by director emeritus David Brooke, based on Mr. Clark’s diaries and letters, documents the history of Clark’s drawings purchases, which began in 1913.
