How to Read Provenance Text

The provenance of a work of art in the Clark collection is listed in chronological order, beginning with the first known owner. How and when a work entered or left an owner's collection may be included in parenthesis following the owner's name. Brackets are placed around the names of dealers, and footnotes are used to document and/or clarify information.
