Osprey's Nest, 1902, by Winslow Homer (Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute)
Winslow Homer: Works on Paper
July 31, 1999 - October 30, 1999
Beloved paintings like Undertow and Two Guides represent just one portion of the Clark’s collection of works by popular American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910). Founders Sterling and Francine Clark were avid collectors of Homer’s work in all media. For this exhibition, visitors had a rare opportunity to see such watercolors and prints as October Day and Osprey’s Nest which, for conservation reasons, are normally in storage. This exhibition began with Homer’s early images of idealized young women and ended with his powerful late works representing men and women struggling with the sea.
