Brig on the Water, 1856 by Gustave Le Gray (Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute)
Early Photography / Eight Months Out: Recent Acquisitions by the Clark Art Institute
March 5, 1999 - June 18, 1999
Recognizing the ways in which the invention and development of photography informed every aspect of later nineteenth-century art, the Clark in 1998 embarked upon a major initiative to build a core collection of early photographs. Featuring works by Gustave Le Gray, Edouard Baldus, Charles Nègre, Eugène Atget, Francis Frith, Carleton Watkins, and Julia Margaret Cameron, this exhibition provides a sampling of some of the early fruits of this initiative.
