Peter Paul Rubens
Portrait of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel
Ink, oil, and wash on paper
46.3 x 36.5 cm
Acquired by Sterling and Francine Clark, 1926
Peter Paul Rubens made this drawing of Thomas Howard, the Earl of Arundel, an eminent English aristocrat and collector of ancient sculpture, while living in London. He had been sent there in 1629 on a diplomatic mission to improve relations between England and Spain. The drawing is a preparatory study for the oil painting of Arundel in the collection of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts.
