Late in his prolific career, the Parisian photographer Eugène Atget was commissioned by the painter André Dignimont (1891-1965) to produce a series of images of prostitutes, for an unrealized book project. In this stark image of a young woman emerging from the shadowy doorway to a Versailles brothel, Atget avoids romanticizing or eroticizing his subject, instead taking a documentary approach consistent with his unpopulated architectural and urban views.
