This picture belongs to a series of industrialized marine subjects that Pissarro made in Rouen in 1896 and 1898. Painted with a more somber palette than his earlier landscapes, the rigorously organized composition, a sequence of interlocking horizontal and parallel forms, brings a sense of order and stability to the bustling harbor scene.
