Notes:
This is one of a series of twenty-eight views of the façade of Rouen Cathedral that Monet painted between 1892 and 1894. Like the others, it reveals his fascination with the effects of shifting sunlight and nuances of color on the complex façade. By painting directly onto unprimed white canvas, Monet increased the brilliance of his colors, capturing the bright orange and gold of sunlight reflecting off the west front of the church. His heavy application of paint has a sculptural quality similar to that of the cathedral itself.
