Elizabeth and Thomas Linley
Oil on canvas
69.8 x 62.3 cm
Acquired by Sterling and Francine Clark, 1943
Elizabeth and Thomas Linley exhibits the fluid brushwork and rich color that made Gainsborough an extremely fashionable portraitist in late eighteenth-century England. The Linleys were a talented family of musicians, and Gainsborough painted them many times throughout his career. The same year in which he sat for this portrait, young Thomas traveled to Italy, where he was befriended by the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
