Notes:
The two-handled cup of 1742/43 might be called a signature piece of Paul de Lamerie, the eminent goldsmith of eighteenth-century England. The rococo style is abundantly apparent in the enlivened and energetic design of the object. Its myriad details - the infant Bacchus, grape clusters, scrolls, and flowers - create a breathtaking and dizzying effect. On the foot, two lions' heads are adrift on a sea of scrolls; on the handle, a tiny lizard perches atop a bunch of grapes.
