Sugar Urn and Cover by Paul Revere, Jr

Paul Revere, Jr
American, 1735-1818
Sugar Urn and Cover
Boston, c. 1795
24.1 cm high

The famed American patriot, Paul Revere, was also an accomplished silversmith with a sizable and well-documented oeuvre. The covered sugar bowl shown here epitomizes American neoclassical silver in its clean lines, elegant proportions, and restrained ornament. We know the original owner of this urn, Sarah Sargent Ellery, through the monogram engraved on the body of the urn; she probably acquired this piece shortly before her marriage in October 1795.
