The superb neoclassical soup tureen and stand marked by the Viennese court goldsmith Joseph Ignaz Würth exemplifies the splendor and formality of eighteenth-century Continental dining silver. The tureen was originally part of an extensive dinner service, known as the Polish Service, commissioned by Albert Casimir, Duke of Sachsen-Teschen, the brother-in-law of Marie Antoinette. It is one of the most important examples of eighteenth-century Viennese silver to have survived the Napoleonic Wars. Its sophisticated styling and craftsmanship clearly demonstrate the dominance of French taste at the Viennese court.
