German
Cup and Saucer
c. 1715
Böttger Stoneware
Cup: 4.2 cm in diameter
Saucer: 12.7 cm in diameter
1955.1212

Notes:
This cup and saucer are the earliest objects in the Clark's porcelain collection and the only examples of the reddish brown stoneware developed at Meissen by Johann Friedrich Böttger while attempting to discover the formula for hard-paste porcelain. Early cups such as these were often made without handles in the style of Chinese teacups. This thinly potted, fine-grained ware is highly polished and embellished with applied acanthus leaves.
