Pair of Wall Sconces by Peter Archambo I

Peter Archambo I
English, active from 1720; died 1767
Pair of Wall Sconces
London, 1730/31
41 cm high, 29.4 cm wide

These magnificent wall sconces belong to a set of six commissioned by George Booth, second earl of Warrington of Dunham Massey in Cheshire, England. These sconces are the most extravagant objects amongst Lord Warrington's extensive collection of silver. The pair's identical heart-shaped backplates are cast and chased with putti, scrolls, and floral swags; the central reserves depict mythological scenes, one representing the death of Phaeton, and the other the story of Narcissus and Echo.
